The White Eyes - Kiss Your Eyes

by Jeff Curran

The White Eyes are a great live band. I've seen them perform many times and they are definitely a rocking outfit. Wonderful rock and roll guitars, a super driving bass and drum rhythm section, and a lead singer, who can get the crowd to dance like maniacs.

The album starts out with a heavy Zeppelin influenced rocking jam and quickly devolves from there. Unfortunately, it gets old and boring quite fast. The music is there, but I think the songs are too long and repetitive. In the second song, lead singer, Gao Xiao Gao, asks the listener if he or she would like to "Party, Party!" but even at that very early point in the album listening, I wished that it was over...

Repeating the verse is a time-tested method to writing really cool rock and roll songs, but they usually don't go over two or three minutes. The Ramones were a great example of this. They would even let the listener know that they are going to hear the same verse for a second time. The White Eyes do this far too often on this album, and the songs are too long. They don't even give you the courtesy of telling you they're going to repeat themselves.

The third song has some pretty mean guitar riffs and scary vocal growls, but the lyrics just didn't do anything for me. "I Porn, You Porn, Let's Get Porn" sounds like something I would have said on the playground in elementary school. Maybe I am just getting older, but I found myself laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of this track.

The album does have some really great parts. I love the guitar playing and the singer has a great voice, but I was happy when it was all over. Maybe if they shortened the songs or just sped them up, it would sound better, but overall I would dismiss this album as being boring. Give the album a pass. Go see them live instead!
