Forests (森林合唱樂團) are a relatively new band in the Taipei scene though you might know their three members from Sunset Rollercoaster, Sleaze, Boyz & Girl et al. Their set was pretty short but what we got was good stuff. Midway through their set somebody pointed out that their sound was reminiscent of Sebadoh, which I suppose is fitting, though they definitely had more going on than that. If you like your rock loud, distorted and peppered with moments of beautiful mayhem then you'll want to keep an eye out for Forests' next gig.
I grew up listening to lots of indie rock, but Sebadoh were one of those bands that I never got around to listening to much. No matter, over the last couple of months I've been familiarizing and re-familiarizing myself with their material.
So what of their live show? Pretty kick-ass I gotta say. Over the course of around 100 minutes they banged out over 20 songs, and I was surprised how many songs I knew and could sing (or mumble) along to. From where I was standing it seemed like the audience was pretty subdued (was anyone dancing?), but I'm becoming more accustomed to that in Asia.
I talked to a number of people after the show and it seemed like everybody had a great time. The diehard fans still elated at seeing one of their all-time favorite bands in Taiwan and I suspect there were many new Sebadoh fans created tonight... myself for one.
